BOS RESOLUTION NO. 95-342 A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE SIGNING OF AN AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR AND THE STATE OF ARIZONA CONCERNING THE CENTRAL ARIZONA PROJECT WHEREAS, at their meeting on August 7, 1995, the Mohave County Board of Supervisors considered supporting the Central Arizona Project agreement between the Department of Interior and the State of Arizona, and WHEREAS, the State of Arizona was allocated 2.8 million acre-feet of water annually from the Colorado River, and WHEREAS, the Federal government built the Central Arizona Project to bring Colorado River water to Maricopa, Pinal and Pima counties, and WHEREAS, the Department ofInterior and the State of Arizona agree that Arizona's share of the cost of the project is $1.9 million, and WHEREAS, a tentative agreement was reached in March 1995 and Secretary ofthe Interior Bruce Babbitt stated that ''It was a good bargain for both sides ...", and WHEREAS, the signing of the agreement was scheduled for June 9,1995, but the day before the signing ceremonies the event was canceled by the Clinton administration, and WHEREAS, reasons for canceling the signing ceremony appear to be the lack of a settlement on the Indian water claims and efforts by Nevada to obtain a portion of Arizona's Colorado River water allocation, and WHEREAS, Arizona needs the CAP water to ensure enough water for future growth. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Supervisors supports the tentative agreement between the Department of the Interior and the State of Arizona, and the Board supports the immediate signing of that agreement. . . . RESOLUTION NO. 95-342 Page 2 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that should Indian water rights continue to be an obstacle, the Department ofInterior and the State of Arizona consider cooperating with the Tribes in Arizona to resolve outstanding Indian water issues.
